1. Remove Brake Batteries
If your trailer brakes have batteries, remove them and store them at room temperature to get the maximal battery life out of them. Leaving them plugged in and unused causes unneeded wear and tear, and may drain the batteries down, especially if they will be stored outside. If your trailer is going to be outside, keep the batteries inside and charge them every 2 to 3 months to keep them in working condition.
2. Save your suspension
Jacking up your trailer instead of just letting it rest on the tires will do wonders for your suspension. Leaving the trailer idle for extended periods of time is not good for your trailer suspension system or tires.
3. Grease it up
Grease any moving parts, such as the hitch, bearings, hinges, suspension parts, etc in order to prevent wear and tear. If the trailer will be stored outside, consider investing in some sort of cover to protect it from the elements.
4. Cover it up
A protective cover can save you a lot of trouble if your trailer is being stored outside. Even something simple like a tarp can protect your trailer from the weather, rust, and erosion.
5. Trailer wheel bearing care
When a trailer is actively in use, the bearings basically self lubricate when they rotate. Every couple of weeks you should make sure to re-lubricate your axle bearings as when it's not in use, it will not be lubricating itself. Removing the tires entirely while in storage is a good idea as well. The constant change in weather and temperature is never good for a tire.
If at all possible, store your trailer indoors. Following all of these tips should increase the lifetime of your utility trailer and help maximize your return on investment.
